Unknown from Deep Springs Road, Central NY

I found this while splitting a chunk of shale leftover from my first trip to the Deep Springs Road site last year.

Middle Devonian Windom Shale,
Moscow formation, Hamilton Group.
Deep Springs Road Quarry,
Lebanon, NY.

I think it might be phyllocarid in origin, but am obviously open to any and all other opinions.

Doesn't quite look like a Rhinocarid - The spiky thing is throwing me off.
I don't believe it is a bivalve or similar hiding under the "phyllocarid shell".

Thoughts?

Thank you, as always, in advance for your assistance.

Sounds about right. I agree, Phyllocarid.

Many times I've wondered how much there is to know.

I would agree it is a phyllocarid, and most likely Rhinocaris. I have found similarly iridescent specimens of this genus at Deep Springs and near-by sites.

Thank you, Karl.

I appreciate your chiming in.

Thanks for the links and pics, Abyssunder.

I actually have a Rhinocaris from the site already.

I was just a bit confused by the seemingly attached spike - must be from something else.

Congratulations Tim,

Though you didn't find any Phyllocarids on your last trip to Deep Springs Road, hopefully this makes up for it. Real nice specimen.

Jeff
