InfoHungryMom
TOTALLY GAGA, wow, I don’t care if it doesn’t have fossils- I AM IN LOVE! Tons of blingy wow. Photos don’t do it justice. As that great orator, Pee-wee Herman, said, “If you like it so much, why don’t you marry it?”

InfoHungryMom
I was thinking “worm holes” and “bone” ... and then this baby sparkled.... 4 cm x 5 cm / 1.5” x 2” Please say nice things, even if it is younger than me!
InfoHungryMom
I am guessing Chalcedony?!?! BIG QUESTION- is it more challenging to find fossils in river and ocean rocks? Thank you!
Rockwood
Most of the time I don't really look for fossils. I look for rocks that look like the ones that I have found fossils in before. They are easier to spot at a distance.

ynot
Looks like a cryptocrystalline quartz. Does it fizz with vinegar? Can it scratch a knife? 2 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." InfoHungryMom
Hi ynot- 1. no fizzing with vinegar - used white vinegar on various areas... no fizz. Should I do it directly on/in the crystals? 2. CAN be scratched w/knife Btw, I found these other two additional rocks that clearly do not have fossils - one which I think looks similar to the smooth part of the sample I asked for assistance with. I figured the additional rock is “a mineral relative” of the other two. AGAIN, all could be scratched and none fizzed!
ynot
They all look like cryptocrystalline quartz, but that should not scratch with a knife. Sometimes calcite can look like that but it would fizz. Are You sure that it scratched ? Or did the knife leave a streak? Are You using a steak knife or one of the new hardened alloy blades? Try using a nail. 1 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Will Rogers said: " Some of them didn't spring far enough." My Fossil collection - My Mineral collection My favorite thread on TFF. Innocentx
Nice rock. It looks like there may be bits of fossils in it, you would need something like a 10x loupe to see them.
