VTinNorthAB
Hey all! I was visiting a friend who owns a local rock and gem shop here in Edmonton. I guess he had purchased a small storage locker of Canadian minerals from a couple who bought a shop in the 70’s. In one one of the boxes was this weird thing. I asked him if he knew what it was and he had no information for it. No idea where it came from or what it even was. I asked if he would sell it to me and he said sure. I have a feeling it’s a whale’s inner ear bone?? Any help?

caldigger
As I understand it, if you put it up to your ear you can hear whale songs. But you have to do it in a crowded area so everyone can see you or it won't work!

Lucky for me my kiddo already did that in the shop and she said there was a woodpecker and a t-rex in there
VTinNorthAB
Anyone know if this is more recent or how to tell if it’s fossilized
caldigger
Looks more like a failed attempt at a flower pot you made in ceramics class! I'm thinking modern.

MrR
Cool bone. That's the second one of that size, and perhaps type, that has been discussed here in the past couple of weeks. Here's the last one: Big bones.

Boesse
This is a modern (not fossil) tympanic bulla from an extant gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus)

It was an odd piece to find at the shop. My 4 year old for whatever reason is really attached to it but it will definitely be brought in as a great educational piece for their school
