Looks like a new set of photography techniques will assist us in determining what is associated and what was added to those drool worthy discoveries.

Seems like a good way of detecting hidden repairs?

I have a UV torch at home. Might be worth shining it onto some of my pieces and seeing what comes up.

You may be seeing many more people walking around the fossil shows looking like this! :default_rofl:

Nice, thanks for sharing!
It has long been known, that faded mollusc shell color patterns can be made visible with UV-light.

An old method is dipping the shells in a nearly boiling, diluted alkali silicate solution (Hoernes, 1856). Never tried this myself.

It seems that another method is to soak them in concentrated bleach before passing them under the UV lamps, but I don’t know if in the long run it damages the shells or not. Method used by some scientists.
