Flake Knife

Harry Pristis

A uniface tool made from a large flake of Coastal Plains Chert. Uniface tools are commonly Paleo-Indian, and this one is no exception, based on associated artifacts. This flake tool was knapped on all edges. It may have been used on bone, antler, or hide of Pleistocene hold-over animals such as horse, tapir, or even elephant. Or, it may have been used to fashion wood implements. The hinge fractures along the edges indicate that this tool was worked hard.
