Found at an estate sale in Fayette County WV. I have no way of knowing the place of origin but the other fossils in his collection looked like the typical fern fossils and "kettle bottoms" normally found in the local area. This is a cone shape about 38" long and about 12" wide on the big end. The cone is squashed so the cross section is oval instead of round like a true cone. Appears to be the same type of slate or shale found locally. No way of knowing if this piece is local but The local geology is coal sandstone and shale. Any ideas?
