fossilus
I, my son and grandson went canoeing yesterday on a river in SE Texas. My son spotted this from about 50 yards away on a gravel bar. I'm pretty sure it is Eremotherium but wanted confirmation as it would be a scarce find here. It weighs about 11 lbs and is about 8 1/2 inches wide maybe 9 inches tall. Any input? @garyc @ harry_pristis @ shellseeker @uncle siphuncle @PrehistoricFlorida 4
caldigger
Your son has good eyes. I can barely see 50 feet ahead, let alone 50 yards.

Yes, I've found we bring home alot more fossils when he comes along. Also, he stowed all his finds. We dumped (flipped) the canoe after some rapids, so his stuff was all that made it home. It was quite a trip.
Harry Pristis
It appears to be a giant sloth astragalus, alright. It's larger than my example which Nate thinks is a mylodontid. That leaves megatheriid. 6 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
fossilus
Thanks Harry! I've attached a final photo of the astragalus next to one from a mammoth and a horse for size. The mammoth is 7.5 inches wide.

PrehistoricFlorida
Yes, it's an Eremotherium astragalus. Here's another example of one for comparison: 1 www.PrehistoricFlorida.com
