Surprisingly pristine for a beach find. It is either Otodus (Carcharocles) angustidens or O. auriculatus. If you give more information on which beach we might be able to narrow it down.

I live 15 mins from the beach but it was not a beach find.  Funny thing is that it was fossilized in some hard clay/rock that was delivered to my house for a project.  I am trying to find out what job site the dirt was brought from.

I changed it for you.  Not trying to beat up on here over my find.  Just trying to get some info on it.  Thanks though!

As per forum rules, we do not provide appraisals.

Ok, I don’t need an appraisal.  Just trying to see if this is something I should hold on to or give away?

If it were me, I would keep it (unless you want to give it away to me :P ). It is a stunner in terms of preservation.

It did because it made me have three tags.  I found a more appropriate one!

If the material came from a quarry we can figure out whether it is an auriculatus or angustidens based on your location. Usually they don’t haul material very far due to costs. If you live around the Maysville area it is most likely angustidens. If you live in the Wilmington area it probably is an auriculatus.

I live near Topsail Beach.  It came from a site they were clearing to build a house.

The area around Topsail has Oligocene material. Your tooth is most likely Otodus (Carcharocles) angustidens. The recent (couple years ago) beach nourishment of Topsail brought a lot of Oligocene material onto the beach. The tooth is very nice. Usually there is some tip or side cusp damage but yours is complete.

I would consider submitting this for vertebrate fossil of the month!

Provided that it was found this month. ;)

Fantastic quality. You should definitely hold on to it. It's a fossil commonly found in your area, but it is exceptionally well preserved.

Mark.

Fossil hunting is easy -- they don't run away when you shoot at them!
