Fish or amphibian?

Strepsodus

Recommended Posts

I found this upper Carboniferous tooth in the Yorkshire coal field a while ago.  I am unsure if it is from a fish or an amphibian.  It measures 5.5mm long.  Any help to identify it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Daniel

I’d say that it’s probably fish, either Rhizodontid or some large Paleoniscoid. It’s a beautiful tooth!

Cropped brightened, and rotated.

Not sure on this one, but I am leaning toward fish.

Lovely tooth! I'm also not sure but would lean towards fish, is that a little cap of a different material on the tip?

Thanks for the replies.  Looking at other similar teeth, I agree this is a fish tooth.  I don’t think it matches any of the Rhizodontids in the area (though they are not very well known) but it does look very much like a Paleoniscoid tooth.  I don’t think there is a cap of different material at the tip, though it’s possible that more of the tip is under the matrix.
