natterjack1
I wondered if anyone might be able to help with this oddity. It's about 4-5 cm long, and was found on the beach at Wells-Next-the-Sea in North Norfolk, UK. Exciting dinosaur brain? Mundane piece of flint? Put me out of my misery, please! Fossildude19
Other views might help - ends, back, front, top, and bottom. I think this is geologic in nature - but it could be some water worn man made item. 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." natterjack1
Thank you, Tim, Much appreciated. Here are a couple of shots using a scanner (which has enhanced the colour a bit too much):
Rockwood
Looks chert ish to me. I'm not sure what the pattern is, but it appears to be more of a stain.
natterjack1
Oh, it's telling me I can't upload any more images. Here are a few more on mediafire: www.mediafire.com/convkey/c35c/17wn9ndhhvf2gqczg.jpg www.mediafire.com/convkey/57c4/is142f0n5qhjt7ozg.jpg www.mediafire.com/convkey/6aa9/5faqbxarprrriqczg.jpg
natterjack1
Thanks Rockwood. The patterning is odd - it does appear to have been worn away to reveal the duller layer underneath.
westcoast
A heavily worn echinoid in flint?
TqB
Definitely a worn internal mould of an echinoid in flint, probably Echinocorys at that size if it's not complete. Edited November 12, 2020 by TqB 5 Tarquin
