Need Help to Identify

TaterSaurus

Hello. I came across this fossil recently while at GMR in Greenville, North Carolina. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me what it came from & what part. My friend I went with thought it was some sort of jawbone piece. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, but from Greenville, Maine I see no indication that this is bone. I'm not at all certain what it is, or if it is a fossil.

It looks like your piece may have a lot of debris that is making it harder to see details, especially in that last picture.  It may help to identify it if you clean it up a bit so it's easier to see the features.

I learned about cleaning the bones I found from this link:  https://sciencing.com/clean-fossil-vinegar-6148450.html

But there are places on this forum where they discuss in detail the different ways to clean depending on what type of fossil, how strong it is, and how likely it is to dissolve in chemicals, so you may want to look around a little. It seems the safest way is just using water and gently using a soft bristled toothbrush.  Since everything I've found has been in loose sand/gravel and already tossed and turned by the river, it's pretty strong, so I've used the vinegar method and it worked very well.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge could give additional tips on cleaning.

Good luck!
