Is this Keichousaurus authentic?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I´m new to the forum and I would like to thank you for allowing me to enter.
You see, I am fond of paleontology and to tell the truth something of a novice, I have a small collection of fossils that still continues to grow today, I´m very interested in Mesozoic fossils, but even more so in creatures that are not dinosaurs.
One of the specimens that I dream of having in my collection to study and enjoy is Keichousaurus.
As well we should all know (And I hope not to bother you, because I notice that the topic is quite frequent in the forum) Keichousaurus is one of the most falsified fossils, but I still have the hope of obtaining an authentic specimen.
Today in the morning I was looking between pages and I found this specimen that has not yet been cleaned or prepared (supposedly) and the truth is that I have doubts as to whether or not it is an authentic piece.
I hope that with your wisdom you can guide me, thank you very much for your attention

I'm sure it's real too, but pretty rough example. There's lots of nice ones around. Personally I'd keep looking.

Estoy seguro de que también es real, pero un ejemplo bastante tosco. Hay muchos buenos alrededor. Personalmente seguiría buscando.

Well, thank you very much!!!

Both look authentic to me. I think, no one would sell such "poor", featureless fakes. They are simple not showy at the moment.

They are "poor", because they are unprepped, as already said. If you don´t have any experience in prepping these, I would avoid them.

And as also already stated, you don´t know the completeness of this particular specimens.

On the other side, if they are at a bargain price (for your budget) and can be purchased legally and you are willing to learn how to prep these correctly, then go for it!

And if you know someone that can prep them for you ?? .. you may just have something wonderful under that matrix. These fossils fascinate me, occasionally we see some real solid prep work. This was posted on The Fossil Forum Facebook page by Image Credit user: Eddie Liu

No grinding or acid prep here ... :default_faint:

That has to be the most beautiful keich I've ever seen!

@Dendrocursor if money isn't too tight and you're looking for the best possible specimen, unprepped could be a good option. If you can get an expert to prep it, you're sure to get better results than 99% of these on the market. (Though as said above these particular ones may not be complete)

Or as Franz Bernhard mentioned, if you can get a few cheap it could be a great experience to try your own hand at it.

For free?? ;). This would not be cheap if done really good and carefully like in your example. Not everyone can afford that.

Indeed, it's not very economical. I'd imagine that's a large factor in why these are treated so harshly in the first place. At the end of the day, the time alone involved in prepping one of these nicely is worth more than the fossil.

I imagine specimens like the above are most likely to end up in a prepper's personal collection. But if you have the mind and means to part with a large sum of cash, not too many things can rival a piece like that as far as display

Authentic, with some possible coprolite fossils underneath.

Thank you all very much for your opinions and comments. I will get one of these two keichos and try to prepare them, I am a laboratory technician so handling and preparing reagents is my specialty. Thank you very much to all!! Cheers!

In my experience, those with "nodules" are hard slabs and are very difficult to prep, and the nodules parts are in particular very hard.  So if you want to buy the one with nodules, be prepared for that.
