Pumice stone ? Or sponge coral

Crittle

Recommended Posts

This was found in Southampton on the beach. Would like help in ID-ing it. I am thinking pumice stone, but maybe sponge coral? The back side shows impressions of shell fossils, and inside there is a lighter layer/section you can see, could this be more shell fossils inside ? I tried scratching it and it is soft. Could/should I try splitting it to see what is inside? A225C1A7-22D3-438E-932A-F54AEDB52520.thumb.jpeg.43ebae3e5af477dc2964c53c3cc36cac.jpeg

You can rule out sponge and coral.

I agree with @Rockwoodand i see an imprint of a pectinid-like shell on the last photo.

The real mystery is what was it doing near Lake Huron. It looks like a rock burrowed by marine clams. I bet that it was ship ballast brought from far away.

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.
