Fossil Fish

Hello! I saw a very nice fossil fish with both halves up on auction. It's not raising too many red flags for me, but unfortunately, the seller doesn't have much information; but I did manage to glean all that I could, as well as some close-ups.

They say their Aunt gave it to them, and she claimed to have collected it from Brazil. Unfortunately she also worked on cruise ships so it could be from anywhere, they pointed out.

The matrix reminds me of the kemkem beds, but, I could be wrong. Here are some photos: and, for 10 points, I'd like you to give me the ID, and whether it's real or not

It does look a bit "pristine" to me, though, with the shape being exactly what we'd expect a fish to look like, without any sort of imperfections...

Just racked my brains, it seems to be reminiscent of Paraelops. Could be thus from the Santana Group, north-eastern Brazil.

Early Cretaceous? That might explain why I thought kemkem.

If it is indeed from Brazil, I should steer clear, with the illegal fossil trade, right?

This is from the Romualdo Formation, Araripe Basin,  Santana Group in Brazil - Early Cretaceous in age.

I think it is likely to be Tharrias araripes.  Note that the outline of the fish has been carved to make it stand out better.

Alright; I got the group ID! And the fact it was carved! I'm getting better at this!

The Brazilian fossil trade forbids sale of such specimens, correct?

It does now, but a lot of these were exported pre-ban.

So long as it isn't coming from Brazil, it is likely from an older collection.

Alright, thank you. I will enquire as to the age of when they came into acquirance. Cheers Tim, you have been most helpful!

Just a bit of closure here, Tim. @Fossildude19 the specimen was collected in the 1950s!
