Ohio Fossil

Good morning, Tank here. I hate asking, especially when I am probably completely wrong too, but I've given myself a migraine searching through other sites. I've narrowed it down to something between anything and everything thanks to Google. I found this one, and quite a few more as well, along the bank of the Tuscarawas River in New Philadelphia Ohio. Google New Phila Hog Heaven and there is the spot I've been getting them. None are exactly alike but all appear to be somehow connected by color texture and all likenesses I guess. I just haven't any idea what I'm finding and my wife calls it Aliens Baby, which is banned from our home. Depending on what it is, I might get to show her the pics posted are from inside, with some priceless help if possible. Thanks for the chance to ask you all.

Welcome to the Forum.

This looks like a chert nodule, to me.

Geologic in nature/origin, and not a fossil.

They can form in all kinds of odd looking shapes.

I would love to see that sliced in half and if Tim is right that it is chert, it would take a good polish.

It's not at all uncommon to see this look in rocks that have fossils in them. Often, the two form under similar conditions.

Wow. I really had no idea this could be anything but some type of fossilized creature, just assuming from what appears to me at least, resemble some bone structure or a skeleton. I have a good many of these with most larger than this one is. I don't think I've any other choice now, it's time to get back into the books and study. This is much too interesting to not learn about it. This site is quickly becoming the best place for seeking knowledge as well. Thank you guys, I am going to tell the wife that the alien bones are not alien or bones, make her day too. Thanks again

Another possible is a very worn large cephalopod.

I don't think so - I don't see any real evidence of this.

If it were, (I don't believe it is - very slim chance of it) it is so badly worn as to be useless to most collectors.
