Small foot/ankle bone

Recommended Posts

I tried researching this but all I can come up with is that it’s a foot/ankle bone from some mammal. Size is roughly 32 mm x 22 mm x 43 mm.  Found in North Central Nebraska most of what I find is mid Miocene. @Harry PristisBD43C27B-5AD1-4580-858C-C9AA7D089081.thumb.jpeg.fa50901a825122d966409816bbafa0af.jpeg34DD7D30-23FC-4667-91CA-A8B519FF0A2D.thumb.jpeg.a513faf8a12325fbd11462b106e2faf2.jpegF1CA7547-D6FF-475E-875A-C65D4591CA14.thumb.jpeg.f3ec122641ee27f9e2d03b5590927a55.jpeg9BDE7C6A-9791-4445-8107-DF1F7BC547D6.thumb.jpeg.1bb1690dbd6b24b2cc6fd3bc8df81a1f.jpeg424B9AFF-1797-4994-839B-61672B457EF2.thumb.jpeg.427267a15b6e3c368a679fbc2e9bca00.jpeg308703F3-881B-43D3-B3ED-CB2E8B58AAB2.thumb.jpeg.04b9a71da58287794d43042efb6a43e4.jpegBF8CB84B-CC17-4D61-9EE7-5D5D239A1CB1.thumb.jpeg.76d17a23268b0e4da0e137c92d9ef772.jpegD7340830-004F-4AF8-9529-59375020CD38.thumb.jpeg.4da916be9dfd0d85f9b68ab4e458c38d.jpeg

You might want to search for pisiform,  although I have no specific identification.

That’s actually one of the first things I do before I ask for an ID, go through Harry’s old Posts. :i_am_so_happy:

These bones can be difficult to identify . . . I have a few that remain unidentified.  Even Hulbert doesn't like to guess at these 3D bones from 2D images.  Sometimes, you can get a clue from a homologous bone, if you have one.  It didn't work for me in this case:

Forgot to add. Based on size this bone is most likely from a camel, to small to be a rhino and to big to be contemporaneous horse or dromomerycine genera.

Its a lunate carpal (wrist) bone.

It is hard to believe that I found 2 of these in the last year,  talked to Richard Hulbert and he identified as Lunate and then I could not recognize it here... I must be getting old.  My memory is weak...  Thank you, Larry.  Jack

Thanks! Makes sense, lots of camel in my hunting area. Much appreciated
