Hi,

What do you think?

  • Hell creek formation, Powder River co, Montana
  • CH: 11.2mm
  • CBL: 5.9mm
  • CBW: 2.9mm
  • Mesial serration density: about 7/mm
  • Distal serration density: about 4.3/mm

I was always under the assumption that tyrannosaur teeth were D-shaped in cross section.  I'm no expert though.

Hi, a D-shaped cross section is a feature of premaxillary teeth of Tyrannosaurids.

I see where you are going with that particular mesial carina placement ;)

Cross section looks Nanotyrannus, as well as the shape of denticles from the images provided. Would you have a close up of those?

DSDI=1.6+

Straight as a perfect line.

Thanks for the new images. As already mentioned in the thread, chisle shaped denticles and the rectangular pinched base point to Nanotyrannus.
One day you'll get the DR, seems you got a lot of material to look through :)

Ha, I just got a punch of stuff back from cleaning/prepping, including what I've been posting. So the barrage should be dwindling now.

Couple of points.

We have no idea what the density is for micro teeth of these two dinosaurs and then what happens in different growth stages.  Our knowledge of DR is extremely limited so making ID assumptions just on density is risky on these small teeth.  So DSDI is really nothing you can hang your hat on and need to look at other characteristics to try to ID.

I've seen DSDI of 1.2 on Nanotyrannus teeth in the 20 to 30 mm CH range.    FYI the Dromaeosaurus holotype has an DSDI mostly below 1 even 0.67 so weird things can happen .

Just keep the erasers ready and new research and publications can instantly turn our thinking.
