New Fossil Spots On The Tar Not So Easy

Recommended Posts

I headed out yesterday after getting a nudge from the wife late the nite before. She said you ought to go out tommorrow with the weather supposed to being in the 70ish range. She did not need to twist my arm so off I headed to early bed thinking of heading to some spots I researched online via satalite maps.

Off I headed the next moring to a site along the Tar where a new bridge/road extention had been built. I parked on west side of Tar and started walking towards the river. I had made it about a football field in length and ran into an area that was full of water and no easy way around it. I was just on a scouting mission so I did not even have waders or water proff boots on. Still noticing that I had probally another football field length to go before the river I decided to try the other side of the river.

I got to the other side and while driving in saw man standing down off the road in hunting gear. We talked briefly and he said he thought it was private property and that also they were huntign a bobcat with dogs. All this info I decided was not looking good.

I am just glad I had plan b and maybe c or d to look forward to.. I headed on down to Tarboro by the river where I had spotted a creek on maps and when I got there and walked up to the creek Plan C leaped into my head...This creek if one could call it that was stagnant. Not moving and had petroleum looking scum covering top. Not even wide as a car. I deciided to jump to plan c...

Off I headed to Greenville not really had intended in going there. But this far from home I was not giving up so easily. Having wasted an hour on two busts I was not going to let anymore time slip through.. I got into Greenville and went right to 5th street park and low and behold they had park area blocked so you could not park there.. What did ever do to the fossil gods to make them so angry at me. So off I headed to Elm street.

Finally I was able to get into the creek after wasting away a couple hours. I spent the day near the aparments not my 1st choice but better than not having any chance at fossils. Here is some of what I found not much But a nice GW and an atlas vert not sure from what donor either.. I also am using a double stacked 1/4 and 1/2 inch screen setup twice the work but get some smaller stuff too... Thanks for looking Jeff/Tarheel

Hello Jeff,

Looks like you salvaged a bad day and ended up with some nice finds. Love the Great White tooth and the vert.

Ha, I know that stagnant creek in Tarboro!! It looks promising on a map!

Glad you were able to salvage the day.

What's the water level like in the Tar right now?

wRick Yeah the maps make the creek look so pristine but standing next to it you will have second thoughts haha. The Tar looks high atm probally has been some higher in past few months with all the rain we have been getting and west of there too. I did spy some sand/gravel bars but need a canoe or such to get to them..I have seen it lower during the summers when we have the dry months though... I have a Jon boat but since its only me cannot be handled by only one plus alway have a partner if on one of them makes lif so much easier...

You jealous of us No way in Fossil Heaven, US GMR rats are so envious of yours and Lifes creek, its insane at what you all can pull out only minus the GW's... But thanks for the thought... You need to give all of us locals a yell when you can make it down would love to meet up with you for a GMR run. Really need RickNC along too he knows GMR like no one else...Jeff

Ok I was trying to find spots north of Highway 64 I am sure your spots are down your way but that could work too. I still have lots of the Tar up this way to scout out and one of these days hope to either get a canoe or get with someone who has a way via the water to stops at gravel bars.... Jeff

there are some pet wood spots up your way Jeff, just not real sure of the locations. I think another friend of mine has the GPS co-ordinates for some of them.

Lol the grass is always greener ehh. It would be fun just for a change of pace. I think we will be making it to Aurora this year, or at least really try too. It looks like a lot of fun

Rick up this ways at least on the maps I check online the Tar almost s curves in some spots and If I am not mistaken correct me but in curves the river will throw stuff toward the banks where the sand bars or shallows form.

Don I know also about the pet wood here but all the locals were or are into fishing no knowing anything about pet wood locales. Really would love to find where it is at. I have heard its on the Roanoke Rapids river not sure where there either..

wRick anytime you need a paddling partner for a canoe trip on Tar or Meherrin or local rivers this way yell at me. I know you dive as well. I would only be able to help paddle and search banks etc.. for fossils

Mike/Flyers yeah as Don said just give all of us a yell down this way for the GMR anytime at least someone in area would be able to go.. Jeff/Tarheel

You're correct, but it isn't easy hunting there. And the best time is late summer when the water is really low.

Yeah I was not sure what the bars if any looked like in earlier part of year. I can see them on maps but not sure when the image was taken but therfe are leaves on the trees so it has to be summer or very early fall. Jeff/Tarheel
