lma
I like collecting shells on the beach. Was at Waldport, Oregon on Thursday and spotted what I thought was a shell. I was surprise to find something I've never seen before. Is this a fossil and if so, what is it? I attached a picture of the top & bottom. At it's widest points, it is 2" by 2/12". edd
It's a fossil " We're all puppets, I'm just a puppet who can see the strings. "
snolly50
Just a guess, but it looks to be a bivalve shell that was infilled with coral, fossilized and then ocean tumbled. Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, also are remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. - Douglas Adams, Last Chance to See
garyc
Just a guess, but it looks to be a bivalve shell that was infilled with coral, fossilized and then ocean tumbled. I agree. I found one recently on the Colorado River in Texas in river gravel, infilled with chert. I like yours better with the coral inside. Tarheel59
Actually Shell was infilled with sediment and then hardens to form a cast of shell. Over the milenia the shell dissolves away leaving the cast which surprisingly is harder than the host shell... Yours has some shell left which makes for a nice display piece...Jeff And yes its a fossil as Edd said..
