DPS Ammonite
What is this fossil from the late Miocene Briones Formation, (or adjacent late Miocene formations), from the San Francisco Bay area in California? Fossil is 8 cm long and 7cm wide and 4cm thick. The Briones Fm. is marine. I see bilateral symmetry. Could it be a skull? My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. DPS Ammonite
Does the upper right hand photo show where the skull attached to the vertebral column? finderskeepers
I found something on http://www.sheppeyfossils.com/pages/fish_new_to_science.htm. It's a photo of skull elements of a fish fossil but might give you some ideas...It would be cool to see whatever you have there prepped, might even be worth showing to a California museum curator. Impressive fossil !
DPS Ammonite
I did take it to UC Berkeley to show to a paleontologist. He also thought that it might be a fish. My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned. See my Arizona Paleontology Guide link The best single resource for Arizona paleontology anywhere. Boesse
There's not exactly much known from the Briones Formation - it does look like a teleost. Keep looking at the same locality - the first Desmostylus tooth (described by O.C. Marsh in the 1880's) was collected from the Briones east of Hayward; scattered desmotylian, cetacean, and shark/ray specimens have been found.
