I thought this was kind of neat

I've been spending quite a bit of time in southern Georgia this summer while waiting for the rivers to drop. The Withlacoochee, fortunately, doesn't follow the pattern of the south Florida rivers so it gives me something to do most weeks. I have not been bringing much back these days, either because my luck is down, or because I'm trying to be too particular, but I got this piece the last time I went and thought it was really cool.

Depending on the conditions and the mineral concentration of the local water, these corals will be agitized solid, or hollow with either crystals of quartz or several types and colors of botryoidal material inside. Usually a head will be consistent, because conditions were the same in a general area.

This one though, didn't follow the pattern.

That is quite interesting, and beautiful. I wonder how different parts of the same head of coral were preserved so differently. Maybe part of it was buried while the rest was exposed to much different conditions of salinity or temperature or mineral concentrations or ??? A nice find.

Start the day with a smile and get it over with.

That is a sweet coral geode!!!

Nice find. Was the white side up when You found it?

No Tony, it was face down with the "organ pipe" section exposed. I figured there was something in the other half, so I gave it a hit with the hammer and the cover on the white side came off. It was the best piece from that trip.

My guess would be that a layer of opalite formed on the unexposed area after the coral had eroded out of its matrix. It looks nice but is probably very fragile and could be removed with a needle of air scribe without much difficulty. (Not saying You should clean it off.)

PS It may have been on the whole thing before it was exposed and weathered off of the exposed areas.

I've been cutting and tumbling the rest of my finds from this trip and 4 or 5 previous 2 day trips to Clyattville. This is still one of my coolest finds. Thanks for you appreciative comments.
