Plantguy Posted April 11, 2014 Share Posted April 11, 2014 Cool photos! No mammal sightings but I did see a ton of birds which I didnt photograph. The only photos I actually took this week while fossiling of something live was of this vicious beast in amongst Tamiami Formation Chione finds. One of the Woolly bears! I was surprised this was in focus as he/she was moving in a very big hurry--most of the time they seem to be moving quickly. digit Posted April 11, 2014 Share Posted April 11, 2014 Here's my contribution to the fossil wildlife fauna-- Though the actually do find frog fossils at the Thomas Farm site this one was not quite done yet. Spotted this little Kermit Kin by the campfire when we were relaxing at the Thomas Farm dig last weekend right before we learned that the field we camped it was densely inhabited with large wolf spiders with glowing green eyes (if you shine a flashlight into them, anyway). I'm sorry you are seeing a decline in their numbers. They are here, but certainly not abundant. I have a very strong visual memory from my early childhood of walking down a red dirt road with my Dad and seeing a velvet ant. The image is as clear as yesterday, like a short video clip of her hurrying along. I remember my Dad telling me not to touch it; but in such a way that I was not scared of it, just amazed. I count this as one of those early experiences that gave me a deep, abiding love of nature. I have seen a couple different species out in the desert, one red (though not as vibrant as the one you've shown) and another that is white and very fuzzy...like a cotton ball with legs.
