ynot
Hey hi Folks, I took a trip to the cambrian of western Utah for My 59th b'day. It had been 10 years since My last visit to the Antelope springs in the house range. This is where the Wheeler shale is exposed and lots of nice trilobites can be found quite easily. I left My house at 5 pm and drove through the night to get there. Missed the turnoff at 4 in the morning and drove way past it before I realized what I had done. I turned around and headed back the direction I had just came from. This error allowed Me to see the sun rise over the Utah desert. It was a beautiful morning. more....

ynot
Another picture of the road in... I arrived at My chosen site, which is about 100 yards down hill from the "udig" fossil farm. I started to walk around and look for a good area to dig and look for trilobites. By 10 in the morning it was getting hot and after 20 minutes of walking I had to seek out some shade. And a nice natural "bonsai" tree. By noon it was scorching, and I had to stop and cool in the shade of the little trees. I was spending as much time in the shade as I was out looking for a place to dig. I had already drank a gallon of ice water. more... Edited August 2, 2016 by ynot
ynot
Sometime around 3pm I found this in a tailing pile from an old excavation... A closer view... It is My first multiple trilobite block. more... Edited August 2, 2016 by ynot
ynot
Around 5 pm I stopped to have dinner and then went back out to search some more for the elusive spot I was searching for, one that looked like it would provide some nice fossils. I finely found one around 6 pm and dug till it was starting to get dark. This is what I found in that hole... 12 inch ruler for scale. A couple of close up shots of Fridays finds... more... ynot
I awoke to a beautiful and cool morning... but the cool was a short lived event and the heat soon came back with a vengeance! This is the hole that I had started the day before.. Around 10 am I had a fellow member of TFF show up to dig with Me... Utahfossilhunter. more... ynot
He brought the whole clan with Him... And We All jumped in and dug and dug and dug... I noticed these cones on the Juniper trees in the area, it is the first time I have seen them open like this. We continued to dig in the hole I had picked out, but it turned out it was on a fault and the rock was seriously fractured. We were finding trilobites but not a lot and few pieces of shale that were big enough to split. Around 3 or so We moved to another place that UFH's brother had found. It looked like a very old excavation and had a thinly bedded shale that was coming out in large chunks and splitting nicely. more... Edited August 2, 2016 by ynot

ynot
More of the close ups... After Utahfossilhunter and his clan left around 4:30 I sat in the shade and drank another gallon of ice water, but it did not do anything to cool Me off. Rather than suffer through another day's heat I decided to cut the trip short and head home a day early. At least it was a couple of fun day's in the grueling "frying" pan of the Antelope springs. Thanks for looking, Tony PS At least it is not another Sharktooth hill trip! Edited August 2, 2016 by ynot

smt126
Those are some great trilobites. If you go back you should bring one of those giant umbrellas. If you're not moving much it can help drop the temperature a little
