California Petrified Wood

DPS Ammonite

Recommended Posts

What is this late Miocene petrified wood found east of San Francisco, California in a watershed with Orinda, Moraga, Siesta and possibly Mulholand Formations.

It is about 1.5 inches across in the photo with my fingers for scale. The other photo is taken thru microscope lens.

My goal is to leave no stone or fossil unturned.

Identifying petrified wood takes a good polished cross section and lateral views. You have to look at the cellular alignments and sap channels. It takes someone that is well versed in petrified wood species. (I am not)

Nice piece though.
