It kinda looks like an ear bone?

Recommended Posts

Found this today, something struck me as odd so I stuck it in my pocket.  It’s from the peace river.  I’m looking at it, and it kinda looks like an ear bone from a dolphin or manatee, but I don’t know...it’s something, just can’t wrap my head around it.  Any ideas?

Does not look right for a cetacean ear to Me. Do not know about manatee or dugong.

Part of me thinks it just an odd worn piece of limestone, but some of it really looks like inner ear, with an extra bit of bone attached...I dunno!

It looks like a bone to me, what type I have no idea. I propose a test, Theoretically, if you were to drop some vinegar on it, fossil bone would not fizzle but limestone would.

Already ahead of you there.  Was thinking maybe karst limestone, and I tested it, no effervescence.  Plus, I’ve seen enough bone in my day!  But I’m still clueless.  Maybe at this point it’s a bone that has been tumbled...really, I’m lost.  It definitely looks like something cool, though.

This does look bulla-ish, but I don't know which it might be.

Yeah @Harry Pristis this one is a pickle!  It’s not in bad condition, so it should be a fairly easy id.  So you are thinking whale?

I'm thinking I don't know what taxon it's from.  It reminds me of a manatee auditory bulla in some aspects, but that doesn't rise to the status of guess.

Just give it a nice healthy lick, at least then you can eliminate the question of if it might taste good.  "Mmmm, tastes like Peace River slime!"

@caldigger what would you call a person that identifies fossils by taste? You might have missed your calling!

anyway, I’ll probably just pop this thing in the box of unknowns and oddballs, not to be seen for another decade.

Oh yeah, and for the record, I found this about 50 yards downstream of a bloated 10-footer that had become buzzard buffet!  So...not gonna lick lol
