Peace River 4/24/2024 (lots of 4s)

My friend Dave is a snowbird == returns to a northern State 1st week of May. He is anxious for a few last hunting days until November.

We were out today to a spot that has numerous small shark teeth and occasional interesting finds.

I forgot to bring a sieve...

For the 1st 3 hours, doing 10 sieves an hour.  I pretty much was getting skunked.  Relatively few shark teeth and 1 occasional.

I do like little dolphin teeth.  I think I'll be able to ID this one...

Then things picked up.... Twice as many small shark teeth,  and more than a few occasional.

That's an Equus Earbone middle right.

and about 1/2 of a sloth carpal upper left...

But there is one find on this layout that I am REALLY pleased to have if it turns out to be what I think it is... I even like it if it does not turn out to be a Peccary premolar.

Nice finds. :)

That peccary premolar, if that is what it is, is super.

Great finds! Ill be out today..

Good Luck... Neat fossils are out there,  just not as plentiful as years ago.  Every sieve is like playing a Slot machine...

I’ll say it so it’s out of the way.  I don’t honestly know but might as well eliminate hogs.

Sus Scufa m2?

Now, why does your tooth have that cool ridge around the base? I don’t see that on hogs teeth.

Thanks Jp,  Exactly !!! In January 2018, I found the ONLY fossil I ever found of Platygonus bicalcaratus in a feeder creek to the Peace River.. Absolutely great to have a comparison tooth.IMG_0095molar.jpg.905a7e9674ca9545a93c53ca40c8a4ac.jpg

Now, after 6 years I hope for a 2nd one..

Take a look at the "left" m3..  I think mine is the right side m3. I was incorrect on the tooth position.  A premolar is just too small for my 23 mm tooth. I looked at a couple of nice peccary premolars that @PrehistoricFlorida had on his website..

I have sent an email to Richard Hulbert.

UPDATE:  A response from Richard Hulbert.  As a side,  Richard has written multiple research papers on the fossil Peccaries of Florida.

Quote

The strong cingulum is a bit unusual, but otherwise it looks like a Platygonus lower third molar.

Richard

A cingulum is a convexity mesiodistally resembling a girdle, encircling the lingual surface at the cervical third, found on the lingual surface of anterior teeth. It is frequently identifiable as an inverted V-shaped ridge, and its appearance is comparable to a girdle.

Richard was careful not to name a species.  I called this Platygonus bicalcaratus (A Blancan fauna in Florida),  that designation has been replaced with Platygonus compressus.

I am really very happy.  This is only my 2nd Platygonus tooth in 15 years,

I spend time searching the internet for a fossil,  in this case what is possibly a process from a dolphin Vertebra found on May 1st....

and just sometimes I stumble over a photo of a fossil that is highly similar to another fossil that I could not identify on a previous hunt.. What is the likelihood my find is from an Atlas vert of a dolphin.. I guess it could be some other land mammal or even a Dugong...  Always learning...
