PFOOLEY
I really like Angulithes as the genus of this Nautiloid...though I still question A. fleuriausianus, as the whorl section on my specimen does not seem to be as subtrigonal as described for the species. 1 "I am glad I shall never be young without wild country to be young in. PFOOLEY
I wonder of how much variance can be expected among Nauitiloids of the same species? ...and dimorphism? 1 "I am glad I shall never be young without wild country to be young in. Pilobolus
Being present at the time of the discovery, I can attest to much hootin' & hollerin', and perhaps even a few #$&@ happened, I can't quite remember, but this find is ridiculously awesome and I am decidedly envious. Nice find Mike, and I am glad we spent the time on this formation...I am on board for the journey of learning more about this member of the Dakota and this find in particular. 'till next we venture. -B

PFOOLEY
I sent some photos to Dr. Spencer Lucas (NMMNH) regarding my thoughts on the identification of this Nautiloid...his response was "That looks like a justifiable identification." The specimen (MPF-2018-002) will be labeled Angulithes sp. suture of A. fleuriausianus from Weidmann, 1960: MPF-002-2018 compared with A. fleuriausianus from Wilmsen, 2000: Now, I need to find some more Paguate specimens! Nautiloids in a dozen Cretaceous formations and a handful of Paleocene and Eocene to boot. But of all I’ve seen, yours is def one of the better preserved, and looks quite stately set in matrix. Never heard of that species either. Well done. Grüße, Daniel A. Wöhr aus Südtexas "To the motivated go the spoils."

I told Mrs. PFOOLEY about my donating it...let's just say that will be on hold for a bit as it will continue to mesmerize the Fooley family for a while longer. Mike: Your question about within-species variation is a good one, as I perceive the Wilmsen sample (and others in this thread) as being more ventrodorsally "fat". I noticed that, too. gotta' wonder what a large sample size would show...two forms with a sharp division, or a gentle morphing from one to the other. to me, the former would suggest sexual dimorphism.
