possible gastropod from Penn Dixie

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

This past Sunday, while I was at the "Dig with the Experts" event at Penn Dixie in Hamburg, NY, I found something a little different from my usual finds.  I think it's a gastropod, but I'm not at all sure, so I was hoping for your input.  The specimen is about 5mm in diameter, and you can see it in the eight pictures below - thanks in advance for your help!  Oh, and the age is mid-Devonian.

@DevonianDigger - are these pictures more helpful?  Thanks again!

Looks like a platyceras type gastropod to me. Some better exposure might reveal the genus and species.

Sorry to make things more complicated here, but although I can also see a possible Platyceras there, I wouldn't rule out goniatite. Can you remove it from the matrix without damaging it?

Hi Roger!

I haven't tried to remove the specimen because I'm worried that I'll damage it - whether it's a gastropod or a goniatite, either way it's a new find for me from Penn Dixie, so I don't want to ruin it!  Perhaps you can have a look at it with the aid of a loupe when you come to visit next month, and then you can advise me further?

Yes, of course I can do that, unless you happen to see Malcolm beforehand.

Monica, as they say you know where I live, it would take all of 5 minutes to clean it up for you. Not sure I would take it out of the matrix but then that is personal preference I always prefer fossils in matrix.

Hi Malcolm!

Of course I'd love for you to clean up all of my fossil finds - I just don't want to bother you too much.  I do have a couple of things from Penn Dixie that I wouldn't mind you looking at/cleaning up - I'll PM you to see if I can drop by sometime when you're free...

Thanks for the offer!

Monica

PS - I also prefer to keep fossils in the matrix, when possible :)
