Dantheman135
I was out fossil hunting and was seeing some small shells and pieces of small crinoid. Then I came across this giant. It is 2 pieces of crinoid stuck together in matrix. I am used to Cretaceous fossils not Pennsylvanian. Does anyone know if this is large for a crinoid? It is the largest one I have seen but I have only looked for crinoids 3 or 4 times before. Size: Longer one is 16mm in diameter. Smaller one is 14mm in diameter. Fruitbat
I have seen a couple of them that were close to that size in the Pennsylvanian exposures around Jacksboro. Still...not TOO many of them! Nice find! -Joe 1 Illigitimati non carborundum Fruitbat's PDF Library
Tidgy's Dad
Yes, nice pieces of crinoid stem. Decent find. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
BobWill
That's huge. There's only one place in North Texas I know of where 14mm diameter stems are common. Here's the biggest find from that site.
Dantheman135
Thanks! I found this one in Missouri. It was actually an accidentally find. I was searching a small 5ft by 5ft rock cut while on a walk and saw nothing at first. I saw a couple of crinoid fragments and just as I was about to walk away a circular shape caught my eye. I looked closer and found this. I have been cleaning it and will post some pictures to this post tomorrow. While cleaning I found another piece branching off. Will post in morning probably. Dantheman135
Here’s the back after being cleaned up. You can a piece branching out of the main stem. Do you think I should leave the two big pieces stuck together or try to separate them into two pieces? I may wait until I return to Texas before taking them apart because then I will have some better tools. I don’t think it will be too hard. It is just a small section of matrix.

Please do not separate them, they look so nice sitting together, and they have been that way for many lifetimes! 2 Darwin said: " Man sprang from monkeys." Tidgy's Dad
I agree, leave them together, much better. Love the cirri branching off. 1 Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
Dantheman135
Ok I won’t separate them. I agree it is cooler to have two giant pieces stuck together.
Dantheman135
I went back to the same place and found another part of the crinoid.
Tidgy's Dad
Very nice. Though it could be from another crinoid. Unless it fits exactly with one of the pieces you already have, of course. Life's Good! Tortoise Friend.
Dantheman135
I just seems like they should be the same crinoid. Same diameter and found within a foot from the other piece. It could be erosion. Or maybe it’s just that I want to have a bigger crinoid and my brain put them together
