Marine fossil...bone?

Recommended Posts

I've been down for a little minute, but on the mend and digging again. My first outing produced this guy.

I found a pocket of kaolin, which is exciting because it seems to always hold nice pieces. I was not let down.

I know it still is very encrusted, and I'm trying to navigate it, please bear with me.

It's about an inch. When I pulled the nugget I saw a tiny spot of black- figured I had a small tooth or scale. Started prepping it and...what the heck is it? Doesnt look like shell. Never seen anything like it. And ideas? I'm anxious to learn about it. Thanks in advance! 20180924_152200.jpg.96d5c267307427852ff3a2a4483fa7af.jpg

Hello,

Nice find. It looks like a jaw of a fish...with several teeth.

If you have possibility, you can prepare the fossil to stay with the jaw, totally clean.

Thanks. I had a feeling it wasn't my usual oyster/clam.

agree with fish jaw, but more cleaning may reveal something else.

I'm terrified it'll fall apart, and tips on getting it cleaner?

Thanks for the tag @ynot. How's Tony doing?

I would say it is a pycnodont or bonefish tooth plate. Very nice.

This prep would be best attacked under a microscope with air scribes. If you want to do it yourself, you can use a needle in a pin vise under magnification. It will be slow but you can get it done. If you're not comfortable with that, I would be happy to work on it for you. Feel free to send me a PM and we can discuss.

My finds are usually pliocene, were there still pycnodonts?

I'm looking forward to seeing more prepped out. Maybe you can show progress as you go along. Wonderful find!

The 2nd pic almost looks like a snake laying there on top of the rock looking right at you. lol

If You have not prepped this type of fossil, and the bone is frail or brittle, You can easily damage it.

I think it is one of those fossils that is worth getting an experienced prepper to do the work.

I also look forward to seeing it better exposed.

I'm in agreement, I did a little more, I found a lot more of what looks like teeth, but stopping now. I'm past my comfort level. You can see the gray peeking through. I've not tried to prep embedded bone before. It's a good predicament to be in!

Yeah, be carefull @BuddingPaleo. sometimes going too far can do some damage.  Never a good thing.  You have a rather nice specimen there and you would be doing yourself a favor to be asking @Ptychodus04 any and all questions you may have.

Good advice, thanks!

Amanda, they were too old for your Pliocene Tamiami formation. Pycnodontiformes is an extinct order of bony fish. The group evolved during the Late Triassic and disappeared during the Eocene. Still an awesome find no matter what it turns out to be!

This part?

Yes, Thank You.

But this picture is out of focus and can not be enlarged.

Can You please retake the picture and upload a larger version?

Thanks again.
