Crusty_Crab
Our next stop was the Flagg Gem and Mineral show in Mesa this weekend. I really enjoy this show, making it a point to come here for the last few years. I also saw @DPS Ammonite's post about the show this year. First stop was the Arizona Museum of Natural History's table with a couple of friendly volunteers: Sara saw another Ceratopsian and gingerly approached. Close by was a dealer with a good assortment of fossils.
Crusty_Crab
The best part of attending these shows regularly is meeting other people that have the same passion. These were on offer from an avid fossil diver:
Crusty_Crab
From another dealer was a selection of local material: These footprints were too big for Sara to make!
Crusty_Crab
Next stop was the exhibition section, with items for display only.
Crusty_Crab
You never know what might be on offer. Another dealer had an unusual piece, a Stylophoran(?) most likely from Morocco:
Crusty_Crab
Lastly, we met @DPS Ammonite, where he showed us his specimens on display at the Southwest Paleo Society's table they shared with the Arizona Museum of Natural History. I particularly enjoyed the specimen at the top, a coral encrusted with Azurite and Malachite- a nice intersection of mineral and fossil interests: Lastly was an exquisite piece with several different corals: It was good meeting another Forum member in person, hopefully we'll meet again next year!
Crusty_Crab
We're back in Southern California, and this is sadly when Sara must move on to her next adventure. She'll be leaving in the next day or so. She'll be going to @David in Japan next. Safe travels Sara, I hope you enjoyed your time here! 4
David in Japan
Hi TFF friends, It's been a while since I turned silent observator. How are you all? Today, I experienced a kind of crazy moment. I was couch surfing when my doorbell rang. Checked my doorbell camera just to be sure it wasn't an undesirable representative and saw nothing. Thought it could be one ot the neighbourghood kids doings but merely 30 seconds later, the doorbell rang again. I decided to open the door and, what a surprise to see that Sara was waiting outside! Ok, I wasn't expected to see her with so much luggages. As she arrived, she was greeted by the apex of the family. She told me she crossed the pacific ocean from California to see japanese fossils and cherry blossoms. As she was exhausted, I told her that she won't be able to see the cherry blossom season before end of March. She was a little bit bumped so I showed her our japanese plum trees. She was so happy 😊 I tried to explain her, what she should expect to see but she felt asleep 😴 Hope she (and you) will enjoy her journey here. David in Japan
Since Sara arrived in Japan, a lot happened. After enjoying the peaceful plum blossom, she enjoyed 2 weeks of chaos with rainy days and the flu. She is stronger than she looks and went through these 2 weeks just like nothing happened though. This week, I managed to take her to one of my favorite spot, Amakusa. This late cretaceous marine outcrop yield all sort of shark tooth, bivalves and even dinosaur remains. The weather was fine and she enjoyed climbing the cliff to check if there was something interesting up there. We found an interesting fish tooth, still unknown from this locality. Sara helped me clean it under microscope and here is the result. Not really fossil related but Sara helped us with my daughter school project. We started to warm 9 supermarket quail eggs the week before we all get the flu, and 6 baby quails out of 9 eggs were born. Sara was quite exciting and surprise to see all these baby dinosaurs jumping and running around just few hours after eclosion. Next week, we decided with Sara to go to kumamoto museums. A lot of events are taking place next week and I would like to introduce her to some friends. 1 6 ~~~~~~~~~~~~〇~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warmest greetings from Kumamoto、 Japan

David in Japan
This week, Sara and I went to Kumamoto city museum of history. The museum is situated inside the kumamoto castle perimeter. The place is very quiet even though in the city center. Just next to the museum, you can find the hosokawa palace. A very nice mansion built for the ruler of higo (former name of kumamoto prefecture). Sara wanted to see the summer tea salon and the famous garden, unfortunately a big part of the palace was damaged during the 2016 earthquake and is still closed to the public. In the museum, we first visited the history department. All prehistoric artifacts and antiquities are exposed there. Sara was in awe before the armor of lord Kato Kiyomasa. He ruled Higo and was renown for its spear prowess and its skills in castle design. We then went upstair in the natural history department where we saw the fossil exhibition. The fossil collection is not very big but you can find fossils from all kumamoto geologic formations. The museum is highly recommended if you look for fossils as the staff can suggests you places to go. When looking at the collection, Sara stomach made some weird noises. after investigation, it appeared she was hungry and those late cretaceous ferns were really looking appetizing. Before leaving the museum she insisted to say hello to the Stegodon specimen. 3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~〇~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warmest greetings from Kumamoto、 Japan
David in Japan
After the museum we went to Kumamoto castle. There in front of the entrance, we saw a statue of a very very familiar face: Kato Kiyomasa. Kato Kiyomasa was a very famous warlord during its time but he was although renown for its castle. He built castles and improved the defense of many others. We walked around the castle for 30 minutes, and I showed her my favorites place there. Sara was intrigued by all the green fences and I had to explained her that in 2016, there was a serie of big earthquake that shook the prefecture. A lot of people, lost their life and a lot of building were damaged. The castle was no exception and a big part of it was destroyed. Stonewalls just crumbled and the old building were destroyed. The castle is being rebuilt right know but it won't be complete before 2050. She was very sad but it is what it is. To make her think about something else, I brang her to one of the many garden of the castle and we enjoyed a cherryblossom. Next week, we will go to the opening of a brand new dinosaur museum in amakusa. I hope she will enjoy the trip. 5 1 1 ~~~~~~~~~~~~〇~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warmest greetings from Kumamoto、 Japan
