What animal is this vertebra from?

Not a fossil, but wondering if anyone has any ideas about what animal it's from... It's big and old. Found in pinestraw purchased in northeast Georgia.

Vertebra from a deer would be my first thought.

Sooo, it's pine needles?  Why would you purchase that?

We buy it by the bale as long lasting mulch. It looks good in naturalistic settings. Pretty pricy too, but you can understand why when you see them raking it up under tree farm canopies .
