Beach fossil

leporidae

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone!

I am new here and know almost nothing about fossils. I found this rock on the coast of the Baltic Sea in Latvia and was wondering if someone could tell me anything about it. I have previously found stones with marks or even fossilized snails, but this one seems really interesting (if it is a fossil at all).

What you have are impressions made by rhynchonellid brachiopods.  Interesting pattern, it looks quite nice.

Thank you for the answer! Yes, it looks so nice that at first I thought it's something artificial.

Yep, these are impressions of brachiopods. Very cool looking piece! They aren't the remains of the actual animals themselves, but the next best thing.

Thanks! What about the other side of the stone? It seems like there are some markings as well, or is it nothing really?

These markings look like they may be cross sections of shells.
