Brett Breakin' Rocks
Well, it finally happened ... made the time to stop off this summer at the Rice Museum of Rocks and Minerals in Oregon. Specifically in Hillsboro, Oregon. And wow, WOW .. what a collection !! One that rivals or equals a good number of natural history museums that I have visited. The most impressive was the extensive collection of petrified wood. Some of the slabs could have easily swallowed me. The minerals, as you will see were also quite impressive. Outside there was a seeded rock pile that the kids could dig around in and save their treasures for a minimal fee .. 1.00/lb. The first fist-sized mineral was free. Palm wood from Texas ... Some fantastic corals too ...
Brett Breakin' Rocks
And then the minerals .. were equally impressive. The polyhedroids ?? ... outstanding. Too bad the kids flew through the exhibits. I could have spent a few extra hours here. The crystal calls, I must listen .. haha. These next few images are from the main building. Some beautiful agates .. and this is just a scant few of what was on offer. In one of the outbuildings the museum specialized in specifically minerals found in Oregon and the mines and localities where they can be found. Which is great because we got a good look at what is possible to find in Madras, Oregon where we will be next week hunting for 'thunder eggs'. Very cool. Other mines in Oregon.

Thanks !! ... it'll be a dual camping trip for the kids so I think they will get something out of it. From the description the easy hunting area should be as simple as bending down and picking up the nodules. We will see !! I'll be sure to take a few pictures. Fossilis Willis
I really need to get down there. The Rice has been on my radar for a while now. I don't have much of an excuse. I'm not saying I have a ton of experience with display specimens such as this but I have seen a few pedistalled specimens like this. They are usually in private collections and are not cheap when you find them for sale. An impressive piece nonetheless ! Cheers, Brett
FossilNerd
Very cool place! The petrified wood is amazing! Too bad it’s so far away from me. I’d love to visit! You know .... @piranha posted a link to a post he created on the Rice fossil fest. Every year they also host the Rice Summer festival, it is going to be at the beginning of August. I believe the first week. Time to pack it in and make the trip ... haha From the web "Summer Festival is held each year on the first full weekend of August. This two-day event features live music, food, educational demonstrations, and vendors selling minerals, cut and rough gemstones, jewelry, and more.
