Is This A C.Yingi (Chimerarachne) Spider?

Hi everyone,

A few months back I purchased a spider inclusion inside of burmite amber from between 90-105 million years old which is merely a few mm in size and thought it looked very similar to the C.Yingi spider discovered in early 2018, which is discovered in burmite amber from about 100 million years ago and is only 2.5-3mm in length. Now it is hard for me to get good photos of the spider itself because of its size but I have attached some that I do have to see what your opinions are.

Many Thanks,

Danny

I don't think so.

The abdomen looks much to round in comparison.

True. I am just confused as to what the tail looking thing is, maybe 2 legs together? but seems too long and too thick to be legs.

Blowing up the picture a lot shows that it’s multiple things coming together. I personally suspect that they are stands of webbing that’s stuck together into a long strand. And it seems that it’s legs are grasping it. I’ve seen similar looking occurrences when watering bushes and the hose water breaks and tangles up webbing. I suspect but can’t prove it that something similar happened when the sap hit the spider. It may be the last desperate attempt to pull itself to safety up its destroyed web?

Great analysis, it could potentially be what you said, makes it a lot more interesting! Could this be something more 'rare' so to speak and would it be worth maybe getting it checked out somehow? I am fairly new to fossil collecting so I just want to double check everything so I dont make any mistakes! Thanks for the help!

I agree with Randy

Me too, could this be rare at all and is it worth potentially getting checked out somewhere?

Just now, JohnBrewer said:

No, spiders that size are common inclusions I’m afraid.

Thats fair enough, I thought spider webs were a lot more rare to be preserved though, especially from the cretaceous?

It’s not really a web but possibly some strands. You could always take it to your local museum, they might be able to assist using a microscope

Thats true, i suppose silk more than a web. I will find out, thanks for the help.

@Dannymaz this is the book I use for amber:

They do other books too. David Penny is an expert on amber inclusions.

Admin, you can only buy this book from this website so I trust posting the link is ok. If not, please edit and I’ll pm Danny.

@Dannymaz it makes it more interesting to me but not any more valuable. There are often bits of web or other stuff found with these. For me it tells me a story that I find interesting. It’s a very nice piece to have in any amber collection though! :thumbsu:
