Hello,

I purchased this fossil from China with the description reading - Dinosaur Toe cast.  Can anyone tell me if this is in fact a cast of a Dinosaur toe print?  Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure this is any kind of fossil.

Please take pictures of all sides, in daylight, without holding the item.

Take them from directly above the item.

Turn the item so that it is always facing up when taking the picture.

You may have to brace the item to get side shots.

My first (and cursory) impression is that it may be an internal mold (steinkern) of an oyster or clam.  Photos showing other angles might help.

Either that or the ear of a concrete garden gnome. ;)

You may have said that in jest, but it does have something of a man-made concrete aspect to it.

Seller said it came from a old river bed.

So, it could be anything.  Piece of concrete, clam impression, virtually anything.  Except it does not have any resemblance to a "dinosaur toe cast", at least to my eyes.  Although I admit I am not sure what that would look like.  Sorry.

In theory a collector with  experience at a site where they are found would have been able to with reasonable confidence. I think you would almost need to connect it with some trusted source to ever know for sure.

You're right, but I'm not too sure he was actually a collector.  I will look back at my records and see if he identified the location in China.  When I asked for more information all he said was "it was point down in old no more river bed".  He didn't respond to any further emails.
