Sauropsis longimanus

Sauropsis longimanus Agassiz 1832

    Upper Jurassic

    Tithonian (Malm zeta)

    Solnhofen

    Germany

This is one of the rarer fishes from Solnhofen. Sauropsis belongs to the Pachycormidea, all of them being very fast swimmers.  This specimen is only around 30cm (12") in length, but Sauropsis could easily reach 1.5m and sure was one of the  top predators in the Solnhofen lagoon.  One of the most characteristic features of this genus is the enormous caudal fin with its upper lobe being larger than the lower lobe and the lower jaw being slightly larger than the upper jaw.
