Native-American Artifact
This strange-looking object is a Native-American cooking-stone. It is made of low-fired clay. Such objects were heated in a fire, then dropped into a clay cooking-pot. The perforations and punctations increase the surface area for the quicker transfer of heat to the contents of the pot.
This one was associated with Thoms River pottery in Charleston County, South Carolina.
