Giant Armadillo

These are ankle bones from a black bear-size armadillo, Holmesina septentrionalis. This species lived across the Southeast USA from Florida to Texas and north to Oklahoma and Kansas from the Mid to Late Pleistocene.

'Pool Man' Dan collected the left astragalus (dark bone) in Sarasota County from the Upper Caloosahatchee/Ft. Thompson shell beds. The left calcaneum was collected from a fissure in Marion County, Florida.
