Gar Ganoid Scale

Major

One of the many types of Gar Ganoid Scales.

This particular one was found in a Gainesville Creek, therefore is likely Miocene in age.

The creek in particular of which this sample was found is named Quail Ridge Creek.

This creek can be found in the Locations Map for those whom are interested.

The Ruler above is in centimeters. Each mark is 1/10 of a centimeter.

"Gar fossils are common finds in Neogene deposits all over North America, because their bones are dense and preserve well.

Their easy-identification makes for a fun find when fossil hunting.

As easy as they are to identify, they can't always be differentiated between species.

The two families of Gars that are found include both Atractosteus and Lepisosteus."

^The above information was gathered from Richard C. Hulbert, Jr.'s book, 'The Fossil Vertebrates of Florida'.
