    Salutations

Greetings. I am here to do some fossil research for art projects. I work in mosaics and metal and up until now have just taken severe liberties in my creations and now I wish to create true to form. So basically, I will be looking around and learning, but I may have questions and so I thought it best to introduce myself. For the most part I will just lurk, as they say. I had a collection of specimens but now have exactly one fossil that survived over the years, an ammonite I bought in Morocco when I was in the Navy. Oddly enough, my mineral collection survived intact over time. I won't deny the old collecting bone is starting to jigger around, again. Good day to all.
  5. Hey folks. Totally new here so please go gentle if this is obviously a rock.... I spent a bit of time down on the Jurassic Coast in the UK, Charmouth to be more precise. Whilst there I did abit of fossil hunting and, disappointingly, feel like I didnt find alot. I did find a small Ammonite but I also found a strangely shaped "item".... Ive added as many pictures as I could get from different angles. I don't have a ruler to hand so I added a pencil for reference, the pencil is generally new and un sharpened so id say about 18/19 cm. Any help on identifying it would be great! Thank you in advance

    Ammonite ID (hopefully)

I was given this ammonite for Christmas by a co-worker that was moving out of state. He had no info on it unfortunately. 12.5cm at the widest by 3cm at the thickest. No ornamentation along the edge, but it does have some iridescence across both sides. Tried to get some of it to show in the pics & managed some. Color is an almost pearl white in hand. Any idea's?
  7. I recently got these antique lithographs that were made in about 1910, that are from a rare set of trading cards about dinosaurs, prehistoric and strange animals by Heinrich Harder. On the back is information about the animal by naturalist William Bölsche. (I don’t speak German so I have no clue what they say) I absolutely love the artwork and plan to get a couple more. I thought you all would find them interesting as well!

    Unknown ID - ammonite?

I found this fossil in my garden a few years ago. Always wondered more about it and really have no idea about this kind of thing. I find it fascinating seeing the different layers. Does anyone have any information on this kind of fossil? Found near Northampton, England.
  9. I found this in my boyfriend’s new house, it was previously owned by an old couple and they left behind everything. This was in a bucket with random rocks I assume they found. This was at the very bottom. Upon further research I found that it might be fake so wondering how I would be able to tell. The swirl lines don’t look to be carved and if they were they did so slightly. So I can’t tell

What is this ammonite from Germany?

I can't identify this ammonite from Germany, maybe it's Pleuroceras? Please help me! Thx
  11. Hi. I'm a new member. I love to collect different types of river stones but never found a true fossil. Recently I bought two supposedly ammonite fossils from a small shop at Manali, Himachal pradesh, India. Can anyone please help me identify whether they are true or fabricated?
  12. I just got this back from my friend who prepared it for me today. I found it in December. I thought some of you may enjoy seeing it. It's a lovely example and I collected it from Whitby, England.

    How to prep this fossil?

Hi all! We found this fossil a few days ago on a trip to Charmouth, UK. I’m brand new to fossil prep and I thought I give this a go. However this one confuses me a little because I’m not sure what is the best approach. Should I try to clean it up on the agatized side or the other side? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 14. Hiked up to some Devonian Foreknobs Formation exposures yesterday on a mountain in the Jefferson National Forest in Craig County, Virginia. Found some awesome and beautiful ammonoids, cephalopods, and more!!! Now I’ve just gotta find some trilobites and crinoids...lol Some of the better ammonoids I found in some mudstone: Some of the different types of cephalopods along with some brachiopods: And 2 unknowns, not a clue in the world what these are:

ID Please - for Colombian ammonite

This is a newly purchased ammonite, but I don't have any information, so I'm asking a question. The seller said it came from the Paja Formation.
  16. Hello, How much of this Russian ammonite seems natural and original? Any compositing or restoration (aside from the obviously poorly-restored inner whorl section)? To me it looks good aside from the inner whorl, but sometimes they restore these super well so it can be hard to tell. @Kanopus

    Kiamichi or goodland unidentified ammonite

I found this ammonite, nothing I’ve ever found before. Notice the raised ribs every 3-4 ribs. What do you think? Tarrant county, near a Kiamichi/Fort Worth/Paw paw formation border but it could be Goodland. Lots of small Hemiaster echinoids and smaller Oxytropidoceras ammonites. This one looks Mortoniceras to me!

  21. Hi everyone, my name is Gavin and I’d like to say hi. I am a Geology major that likes to dabble in the paleo world. My beginnings in fossil hunting were as a little kit with my parents but by the time I was in middle school I didn’t do it very often but after I got into a geology class in college I regained my passion for hunting and I’ve been going strong since last fall. I look forward to see what every one has to post! Posted below are some of my best sharks teeth finds so far.

    Fossil? Port Mulgrave Beach

The other day I found this strange looking rock on the beach at Port Mulgrave- a well known fossil hunting site near Whitby. I'd be interested to know if anyone has any ideas as to what it might be before I go ahead and hammer it out...it looks like a typical nodule from the area with several distinct lumps. I hypothesise a group of Ammonites but this is only a guess. Any help would be much appreciated!

    Ammonoid imprint

one of my favorites in the collection. I dont know where it comes, but it's beautiful to show and display. I bought this piece at the beginning of the year when my love for fossils was leading me into collecting. It was one of the pieces that encouraged me to continue in this beautiful hobby, which I hope to dedicate myself to someday. These Ammonites means lot to me. I wish you all a New Year full of fossils and prosperity! Álvaro
  24. I recently acquired this ammonite that is from near Tupelo, Mississippi. Looking for any species identification or other information regarding this specimen. Thank you!
