I bought this from a market for cheap. They said it was from Wyoming. Either way I think it's super cool, obviously more cool if it's real. Does it look real or fake?

I recently made a trip to visit Jamala beach county park- which is a magical beach!! Between the miles of beach, exquisite rocks and rock formation, and cliffs of fossil beds… I could have stayed for weeks. Unfortunately I was chased off by fussy weather- but on the list of definite returns. (From Maryland….) I just ran out of time to really do some meaningful fossil exploration, however I did find these. Help with identification will be very helpful for future visits. Thank you!

I found this fossil on my property at top of Laurelas Grade in Hidden Hills off Carmel Valley Rd. state of Calif. It appears to be some kind of fish. Can anyone give any more information on what this could be? Entire size of rock is approx 6" wide. I have found lots of mollusk type fossils but never a fish. thanks kathleen

All, I have got a strange looking osteostracan fish from Stjordalen Fm, Spitzbergen. It is Emsian. It is not identified but generally belongs to the elongated type of osteostarcan fish from that locality. As you can see it shows that a part of the exterior headshield layer is missing showing probably a viscelar/internal structures. Maybe it is an effect of predation or just a mechanical damage during formation of the fossil. Nevertheless, it is interesting. Pictures are not of the best quality but some internal structures seem to be visible. It is a strange looking one. Any comments or suggestions are very welcomed. Thanks, Tomasz

Hi -- we have this small fossil. We think it's a fish. But some people who've looked at it see a shell. Now we don't know what we're looking at. Can anyone give us some insight? Thanks

Anyone Good with Fish braincases/Skull Material? (Some are very incomplete) ( Missouri )
Samurai posted a topic in Fossil ID
Location: Missouri Formation: Muncie Creek Shale Time Period: Pennsylvanian I have found many things in the phosphatic nodules from the Muncie Creek Shale formation ranging from scales, bones, coprolites and in some cases braincases or skull material however I have found very little of braincases and I was curious if someone could identify what they either belong to or in case of specimen #1 if it is indeed a braincase I was also wondering if someone could possibly link me to some material relating to Pennsylvanian period braincases as It may help me to better identify such material Specimen #1 I posted this one to this site quite some time ago but never got a response to what it was but I am not 100% sure if its braincase or just some other bone material or even the aforementioned coprolite Unfortunately for these last 2 specimens they are incomplete due to my inexperience 2 years ago when I first cracked them open. I neglected to collect the rest of the pieces hence why I have hesitated to show them on this site for the shame of losing something potentially scientifically valuable, nevertheless I was wondering if they could be identified Specimen #2 This one is 100% a braincase but i do not know what it belongs too and wish for identification if possible from the fragment i have Specimen #3 I only think the one above might be skull material is due to how it looks similar to my other more obvious skull/braincase that I own here is a photo of the one I'm describing, which i did have all pieces for: -
Help me ID this Find from a creek bed in texas! Possibly fish scales?
Taterageous posted a topic in Fossil ID
I collected this fossil many years ago as a kid, from a very rocky creek bed in Gorman, Texas. North Central Texas. No idea as to the geological age of the area. The "scales" have a slightly curved face that rises from the center to the sides, but not front and back. They also seem to be leaned on top of another similar to how normal scales are, all pointing the same direction. Almost looks as though the back side of the specimen has bone fragments visible? To my untrained eye, this what I assumed. From my own research, so far I assume it could be from a fish, similar to Lepidote? I'm an amature, so I'm really not sure. Any help identifying would be very appreciated!- 5 replies

I found this odd piece in a grey shale layer in a place with devonian age matrix and fossils from new york with various layers from flakier layers compact with fossils to harder layers like this gray shale layer that this one thats not as compact with fossils as the other ones. I am unaware of devonian fish remains from new york and I usually do not notice odd minerals in the grey shale layer so this this piece baffles me, these small shiny "scales" sort of reminds me of how the devonian fish fossils of the old red sandstone of the uk kinda preserve but other than that I have no idea what else to compare this to. Any thoughts on this piece will be greatly appreciated as I've never come across anything like it at the site.

Receiving this gorgeous but mysterious specimen is from Upper Pennsylvanian limestone dated around 290-300 million years ago from somewhere around Kansas City. Looks like a tooth to me and my best guess would be orodus? But I have little experience with Pennsylvanian shark teeth in general and especially from this area, also cannot find a comparison elsewhere online. Any help will be appreciated.

From the album: 1925 Body & Trace Fossil Collection - Ocean
These three fish specimens are a little harder to see in the pictures but if you tilt the fossils just right you can see the outlines much better. These were only labeled "fish" so I have not researched the species of fish found thus far in Argentina. Out of context you would really have to look hard to see the fossils. Please let me know if I should shoot these a bit differently?- 2 comments
