Got some more work to do.

I mentioned in the other thread that I was going to try my luck in the Wutach Valley again. The first spot I tried was a lot of digging but not much in the way of finds. The second one was much better. I dug out another couple of crates full and the spot is by no means exhausted, so in a few weeks I'll probably have even more work to do. In the meantime, here's what I've got to work on now. The crate on the right has a few puzzles, but I think they should turn out ok in the end.

Whoa!

Roger, that is an impressive haul!

Your beloved Wutach Valley rarely fails to accomodate you, it would seem.

I look forward to seeing them cleaned up.

Regards,

Yup, I just love that place, although it's pretty strenuous work there and I usually need a couple of days afterwards to recuperate. But it sure is worth the effort. Now I just would like to get the last ones from the previous visit finished and then I can get down to this batch.

You must feel good about having future fossil projects ready to go whenever you want. I know I do.

You're right. It feels very good. Otherwise I begin to get restless and start doing strange things ( other than collecting fossils)

I haven't started on the ammos yet, but I brought a couple of bivalves and what looked to be a sea urchin home with me this time and I was curious to see what they looked like. The bivalves are relatively common species, but I hadn't found any of them at this site yet and the echinoid turned out to be what I was hoping. Not in fantastic condition but good enough for a relative rarity.

Now the first ammonite is done. I've picked out a simple one to prep for starters. The before pic was just abraded a bit. That part of the shell was already showing through the matrix. The afters are from different perspectives. It has a diameter of 9cm. and the shell is almost completely retained on this one, which keeps me satisfied.

those look good! Did you put something on the urchin or do they come out like that? The ammo has just enough shell missing to see some sutures. That type must be common there eh?

Thanks Jim. I coated the urchin with Rember, a beeswax finish, as I also do with the ammonites and bivalves here. That species, Ancolioceras opalinoides is, as already mentioned, extremely common. I'd love to find some of the rarer species again on my next trip, but that's a matter of luck.

Roger.... Sorry I had missed this thread.... You were not kidding theres plenty stuff to go at there....I really like the shells...The 9 cm specimen has made a real disply piece sat in the centre of the matrix like that.... Thats how I like em... Well done....

Thanks, Steve. And here's the next one. It took a bit longer than I had figured since a smaller one showed itself on the back. It's 10cm. in diameter and stands quite nicely too on the matrix.

and after.... post-2384-0-77889600-1460816977_thumb.jpg post-2384-0-23858400-1460816997_thumb.jpg

The next one in line is a relatively small multiblock which needs some glueing first. There should be 3 good ones in there.

Yes, I find that the colors are just great on these middle Jurassic fossils. Now for the rest of the progression and the after picture. It turned out that there was also a 4th ammonite. The one in the middle is a different species: Costileioceras sinon.

You're right, Steve. It's good to be finding some other species again. That's why I started in on this one today since it held a small Ludwigia haugi, the first one that's cropped up for me in almost a year. It's one of my favorite species, so although it was in 2 pieces, I was happy to put them back together and add it to the collection.

This next one is somewhat larger, having a diameter of 10 cm. As you can see in the first photo, it looks like it's all in the larger piece on the left, but I noticed a possible continuation of the living chamber in the other 2 pieces, so I saved them as well in the hopes that a complete mouth aperture was in there. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case, but I think it turned out alright in the end.

Thanks Jim. Here's the next one on the production line. There should be 3 ammonites inside these matrix pieces, but there'll be a lot of glueing back together and searching with the air pen involved.

Yup. There were 3 of them. Needed a bit of tender loving care, but I think it turned out just fine.
