New Members Pksuperfly Posted August 27, 2020 Author New Members Share Posted August 27, 2020 It’s very light. Only .2 oz. It feels as though I could crush it pretty easily but it was burried a bit deeper. I know you’re not supposed to dig but I was in the same spot watching my kids play for like 2 hours. Mahnmut
I would say canid, maybe fox or coyote. below is an overlay with a european red fox skull for comparison. 0,2 ounces is about 6 grams, rigt? thats really light, seems somewhat demineralised. Not fossil, but not from last year either in my opinion. New Members Pksuperfly Posted August 28, 2020 Author New Members Share Posted August 28, 2020 Thank you very much! I’ve attached what it looks like this morning all dried out. The sides are thin and I broke off that piece in the yellow circle testing that out. But the rest is pretty hard. Thanks for the replies all! Great info!! Rockwood
The color is looking like modern to me. There are two more tests that are used to determine it's age. My favorite involves more accurately judging hardness with the tap of a spoon. A high pitch favors fossil. Holding it over a lighter to check for the smell of burnt hair is another test. Positive indicating modern bone.
