Circular object.

Hi, this is a fossil I have found when looking through slices of rock.

It's circular, with a depression in the middle, like a vertebrae.

It is 3.6 cm across. It is from the Dyrham formation, which is Jurassic.

Many thanks.

Maybe my eyes are seeing things. But I see a swirl pattern, especially in the second picture, that makes me lean towards a VERY worn Ammonite????

Ok.. a very worn AND squished Ammonite.. Or very worn & deformed during the preservation process. Or.. we are all imagining the swirl.

To be honest, I only see an iron-rich geologic here. Judging by the matrix, this is from the conglomeritic end of the formation, where such things are pretty common. From what I read, lots of belemnites throughout those layers in places, though fragmentary fossils are most common. Here's a fun bit about the area for those unfamiliar:

Thanks for all of the replies. :)

One of these years I’m going to get across the pond and do some U.K. hunting. This is one of the formations on my bucket list!

That's great. I've found many large bivalves there, definitely a formation I'd recommend hunting at. :)

Mostly, I have family in that area I’ve only traded letters with, and they used to send me polaroids of stuff they found there in the 70s and 80s.

I like to just get a shovel, and there are so many things to uncover in such a small space.
