FossilsandScience
Hey everyone, I found this piece when searching for fossils in the White River Formation. I found it at a site that produces a lot of petrified wood. I didn't think it was anything when I first picked it up, but am now thinking it looks like amber. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!
FranzBernhard
Sure it looks at least like amber or something closely related. Does it float in a saturated solution of table salt (NaCl)? Otherwise, you can try the infamous hot needle test. Btw, is amber known from that formation? Franz Bernhard
Mahnmut
Hi, I remember there being a thread on telling amber from copal, and from similar looking minerals. There may be more and better threads on the forum, but, here is the one I know of: http://www.thefossilforum.com/index.php?/topic/108558-its-a-bird-its-a-plane-its-a-chunk-of-copal/ Best Regards, J Try to learn something about everything and everything about something Thomas Henry Huxley
Earendil
Your best bet to eliminate the possibility of chalcedony is to perform the saltwater test. daves64
That may be fossilized (or just really hard) pitch instead of amber. Accomplishing the impossible means only that the boss will add it to your regular duties.
