Cretaceous Hunting With Piney

Recommended Posts

Went creek hopping with Lordpiney in Monmouth Co. , New Jersey. Had another great time searching the gravel bars with Phil. I must be Phil's lucky rabbit's foot - this is the third time I have gone out with him and he found yet another mosasaur tooth (that I walked by twice), not as big as the other but in great shape. That makes two mosasaur teeth and one plesiosaur tooth. I am telling you, he has an eye for them.

We did manage to find some other nice things as well. These are a few of the highlights for me.

post-2410-12635192320024_thumb.jpg Broken Reptile teeth.

post-2410-12635194231575_thumb.jpg Ghost shrimp claws with what Phil believes is some type of lobster claw.

post-2410-12635194470854_thumb.jpg This one is kind of neat, on the one side it has an imprint of an ammonite.

post-2410-12635196219783_thumb.jpg The other side has a Ghost shrimp claw in matrix.

post-2410-12635196919801_thumb.jpg Cretaceous or not, when it comes down to it, it's still just shark poo.

post-2410-12635196450623_thumb.jpg a dermal scute of some kind of rays.

post-2410-12635204861353_thumb.jpg My prize find for the day, a rare fish jaw. Notice it still has the teeth in it. Another first for me.

post-2410-12635204602178_thumb.jpg When I find an ID for it I will post it.

post-2410-12635204708894_thumb.jpg Another look.

post-2410-12635208912686_thumb.jpg Phil intently searching for goodies.

post-2410-12635209268436_thumb.jpg Teeth in situ.

post-2410-1263520949419_thumb.jpg Phil's beautiful mosasaur tooth.

post-2410-12635209756396_thumb.jpg Phil by the waterfalls, well, Jersey waterfalls anyway.:P

post-2410-12635214724108_thumb.jpg Me.

All and all another great day with great company.

That's a nice sized squalicorax! Looks like both of you did real good. I cant wait to hear what kind of fish jaw that is.

That is a realy nice Squalicorax, what is the actual size of it.

@phoenixflood

The largest one i Have is a Morocco Squalicorax Pristodontus that measures 1 9/16 inch or 4 cm. And i have seen some that are slightly bigger.

Hey Phil, you should do a macro on the mosasaur tooth, I thought that the enamel on it was great.

By the way, i found the id on the fish jaw, it was a enchodus fish jaw. I was told there is no way to tell exactly what species it is because of the size but that the Enchodus Petrosus is the most common found at the location we were at.:)
