Top Trilo
I received this fish as a gift and have a few questions. 1. is there added paint? I know some of these have paint 2. is it preserved from the top or the bottom? Can’t remember the terms ventral and not sure about the other 3. is this a gastropod it appears it have a gastropod shape 4. what are these small things in the middle of the spine? “If fossils are not "boggling" your mind then you are simply not doing it right” -Ken (digit) "No fossil is garbage, it´s just not completely preserved” -Franz (FranzBernhard) "With hammer in hand, the open horizon of time, and dear friends by my side, what can we not accomplish together?" -Kane (Kane) "We are in a way conquering time, reuniting members of a long lost family" -Quincy (Opabinia Blues) "I loved reading the trip reports, I loved the sharing, I loved the educational aspect, I loved the humor. Thomas.Dodson
1. Nothing obvious to me. 2. Looks like a more or less dorsal (top) position but I'm not sure on this. 3. Doesn't look like a gastropod. 4. I'm not quite sure what you're referring to but I'm guessing you're seeing the pelvic fins?

Fossildude19
There appears (to me) to be a light inkwash, used to "outline" the fish. It's difficult to tell the orientation, but I believe it is ventro-dorsally compressed/preserved. The pectoral fins showing so much and the pelvic fin showing, as well as a lack of eye sockets in the skull would make me think this. Here is a picture of one of mine: EDIT: Your fish is also more likely to be a Lycoptera davidi. 3 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." RJB
I would say ventral side up because of the gill plates? RB
