NevadaHunter
Hi all, I found these interesting fragments of tooth enamel by themselves and they both appear to have a cusp like shape and the one has a rounded top that didn’t fully break off. The larger piece has some very pronounced horizontal striations, Im not sure if that’s helpful it not. Could these be pieces of mastodon tooth? I know several Pacific Mastodons were found in this area.
Fossildude19
Mastodon was my first impression. They are pretty beat up. Maybe some of the experts will have a look. @Harry Pristis @Shellseeker 1 1 Tim - VETERAN SHALE SPLITTER VFOTM --- APRIL - 2015 __________________________________________________ "In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." Shellseeker
I keep this photo around because it shows so much about how Mastodon fragments look. Before you go looking at the outside of the tooth, look for broken segments which are distinctive. Thick enamel for the size of the tooth and then crossing lines from the outside of the tooth to the inside of the tooth. There is not much else that looks like this... only Mastodon 2 The White Queen ".... in her youth she could believe "six impossible things before breakfast"
NevadaHunter
Thank you very much @Shellseeker! Mine sure does appear to have the lines you mention. It’s much thicker than any of the other enamel fragments we’ve seen so far. Edited April 19, 2021 by NevadaHunter
