Bone Daddy
Not sure what this one is. When I pulled it out of the river, it appeared black. It turned tan after it dried. It looks like a piece of carapace or something along those lines. Soft shell turtle? Crab? Armored catfish? Does anyone know what this weird little thing is? Thanks in advance! Mike from North Queensland
Could be a fish scale but wait for a local to chime in
Harry Pristis
I think this is an osteoderm from Dasypus, perhaps D. novemcinctus or D. bellus. 2 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
Lone Hunter
Question, would it be a flex scute? The pattern looks exactly like softshell carapace how do you tell the difference?
Harry Pristis
It might be an osteoderm from an imbricating band . . . I just can't tell from the images. If not from a dasypodid, I'd consider fish, though I don't know which fish. Even today, salt-water fish find their way well upstream in the Peace River. 1 http://pristis.wix.com/the-demijohn-page What seest thou else In the dark backward and abysm of time? ---Shakespeare, The Tempest
val horn
It is something, wish I knew what. is it fossilized or recent? have you tried a burn test? that kind of surface pattern makes me think fish like gar but no one would consider me remotely an expert. also what is its thickness? Bone Daddy
I am thinking it's either an armadillo like Harry said, or it's from one of those weird armored "catfish" that are invasive around here.
